From Bodmodwiki

A tattoo is a permanent placement of ink beneath the skin. When done professionally and properly, the tattoo is completely permanent, barring any methods of tattoo removal.

Tattooing has been around for many years, and originated in tribes who decorated their bodies for a few differing reasons. In today's society, especially in American society, tattoos are done for beatification, memorial, pride, religious/spiritual reasons, and many other reasons that are all seen as legitimate.
Only in recent years has tattooing become a highly popular mainstream event, although "commonly accepted" tattoos are usually small and relatively discreet.

Types of tattoos vary widely, and include religious/spiritual, animals, biomechanical, pin-up, tribal, lettering, symbols, color, black work, UV reactive, etc.

Depending upon the area of the body, tattooing can be anywhere from a tickling sensation to a larger amount of pain. Since pain is more or less relative, it is difficult to say exactly what areas will be very painful for people. It is generally accepted that areas like the spine, ribs, chest, and lower stomach are more painful than other areas, like the upper arm or lower back.

Healing times on a tattoo can be affected by a few different things, like use of moisturizers, picking at the tattoo (which should NEVER be done), and area of the body. Usually, a tattoo is healed at around 2 or so weeks. Keeping the area totally moisturized is key, since flaking of the tattoo can cause itching. Peeling or picking at the tattoo when it is a scab, or when it is flaking, is not a great idea, as that may draw out areas of pigmentation.
Once healed, a tattoo should be covered with sunscreen when exposed to sunlight in order to protect color.
